A little rant.. Coeliacs that cheat

Ill start off with sorry if it makes no sense as it all come out of my head pretty fast

Ok so this has been going around in my head overnight after someone with Coeliac Disease freely admitted that they still eat bits of gluten here and there and has no care in the world on how it actually affects others with CD, a few others said that they "cheat" as well.  Well this pisses me off, and those that know me and Damian will know that we are very very strict with what Dakota eats and we find it hard to go out anywhere to get foods that she can eat.

Well here is what pisses me off and not slightly but a lot, now we know about those that are on the diet of Gluten Free but don't have CD that's fine, there might be other reasons why they are on this diet but generally speaking they are not 100% gluten free like a person with CD is meant to be.  These people with CD that still eat what they like even if it is small amounts at a time are still doing damage to their body, okay fine its their body do what you like, risk it for other problems that will turn up later in life or maybe not present itself until your dead.  But DONT go into cafe and restaurants saying you have CD and you need a gluten free meal but happy to take the food that is touched with gluten food or the sauces they have wheat in them, that's NOT being 100% Gluten free.

Now this is where it really annoys me and grinds my gears, we then take our 5 year old daughter into the same cafe or restaurant and tell them she has CD and needs a 100% Gluten free meal, and we get this this and this is gluten free, so go awesome but then we are told the fries are cooked with battered fish or hash browns etc and we tell them sorry that's no safe for her. We get back, o we have had a CD person here and it was fine for them etc.  WELL NO ITS NOT OKAY.  Just because they dont show signs after they have eaten it or started throwing up or something like that, it doesnt mean its attacking their gut the villi in the gut that helps with the nutrition going though the body.  Just because they don't care doesnt not mean we shouldnt care and we care.

We get told all the you don't understand what its like to have it yourself, you dont understand how hard it is for us, you dont get it etc.  Well im sorry but i think being a parent of someone so small that can't eat the same as everyone else, we GET it, we understand it but we have also done our research and looked into everything NO AMOUNT OF GLUTEN IS OKAY.  We are the ones that have to watch our daughters heart break every single time we walk into a cafe to get something gluten free and have to walk out cause there is nothing "safe" for her, we are the ones that are holding her hair back while she is throwing up in the toilet because she has been glutened by accident, we are the ones that have to take her to hospital to get fluids back into her because she cant keep anything down.  Those that dont have kids with it and its them, they did it to themselves, the pain and suffering they get from eatting it is THEIR fault, its your problem, you dont deserve the im so sorry you were glutened, why should they? they did it to themselves on PURPOSE.

Dakota has been though so much, and CD would be the hardest thing she has had to go though, all the tears, all the upsets and all the its okay hunni we will find something for you to eat.  Why should she have to suffer cause of these other people that think its okay to eat whatever they like and tell cafe and restaurants its fine? its giving mixed meassages, its giving wrong information.  It gives parents and those adults that are serious in keeping themselves healthy and safe doubt.

For example yup going to name a few places cause lets face it if someone is reading this and wants food they can stay away from these places.

Burgerfuel is one i would never trust anymore, they say they have gluten free options, they say they are safe for CD's but really are they? NO!!! I have been in there to get some chips for Dakota and yes they chips are gluten free, awesome but then i see them cooking something else in the oil, so i ask, is that gluten free, o no sorry that's not but the chips are.  Are they cooked in the same oil as what you just pulled out so you have now contaminated them, they are no longer safe for a CD person.  The buns well the one i went to i wouldn't trust at all, it was a mess, i can just see it now handling gluten and gluten free buns with the same gloves on and when it gets busy man their will be sick tummies so we dont go back there and i don't recommend it to people that are Gluten free.

Another place would be dominos, now they do everything they can to make it gluten free so im told but when i went to to watch one day on gluten free (yes i ordered a gluten free pizza) I stood there and watched the whole thing, AFTER telling them it needs to be 100% gluten free.  They were doing fine and then cutting came well they used the same cutter as the last pizza which was normal, when i asked them about it they said they are too busy to clean it just for one pizza, well in saying that i wasn't taking that pizza with me and asked for a refund, we had an disagreement about that but i did win.

So sure you want to eat the foods you aren't meant then that is fine but don't go around saying you have CD or gluten free then it wont confuse those that work in cafe and restaurants, only say it if your serious about your condition and really want those to understand it.  I don't see why people want to cheat anyway, there is lots out there now that is gluten free and more and more places selling gluten free foods and they are pretty good tasting and im not gluten free myself.

So for a little education for some that are interested the treatment plan as it stands if you want to read more click here its a NZ site

Treatment

The treatment for coeliac disease is the complete and life-long removal of gluten-containing foods from the diet. This should result in the resolution of the inflammation and the restoration of the inner lining of the small bowel.
In some cases medications such as steroids are required to further decrease the body’s abnormal immune response, therefore reducing inflammation.
Medications to treat conditions that have developed as a result of coeliac disease, such as anaemia and nutrient deficiencies, may also be required.
A repeat biopsy is sometimes performed three to six months after starting a gluten-free diet to check small intestine recovery.  Studies suggest that if gluten is withdrawn from the diet the bowel lining will return to close to normal in approximately three months.  Eating gluten again can result in severe damage to the bowel in as little as three weeks.  The amount of gluten eaten, the degree of bowel injury and the severity of symptoms are often not directly related to each other.  This means that the person cannot rely on symptoms to gauge the amount of small intestine damage.  Therefore strict adherence to a gluten free diet is essential.
